5 GHz problems

wilco

New Around Here
I received my RT-N66U today, and after setup the 5GHz channel was invisible to my 2012 MacBook Pro while the Apple TV could detect the network but not connect.

Upgrading to the latest firmware did little to help, allowing the 5GHz channel to be used for a short while before reverting to the original behaviour.

I'm assuming I've been unlucky and this is just a defective unit. Will be returning for a replacement to see if it works

Sorry I'm not able to answer any of your questions, but for what it's worth streaming to the Apple TV was quick and smooth for the few minutes it did work!

Wilco, I am not the 5Ghz expert but I have been working with perfecting the settings for this router a lot in the past month. Make sure you change your time zone to your region...with correct Daylight Savings...etc... I had strange problems with applications accessing the internet...connecting and then disconnecting and timing out... until I manually changed the time zone in the router administration settings (Administration > System tab)...then reboot the router and all your effected devices after applying the changes. For the wireless connection issues you should try experimenting again with the wireless settings to see if that helps with the 5Ghz connection to your MacBook Pro. It is possible you got a unit with a bad 5Ghz radio but it would be a shame to waste your time sending it back until you have tried a few simple changes...try different fixed channels...try 20Mhz and then 40Mhz bandwidths...N only....use only WPA2-Personal with AES...etc.. Try turning off all other wireless devices except one such as the Apple TV and see if you can get it connected just to that one device and working properly then turn on each other device in succession and test. It is possible that one of the devices or it's settings is effecting the others ability to stay connected.

What is the distance and physical environment like where you are trying to make the connection. The symptom you describe sounds like low signal level. Not much you can do except move the router closer to the Apple TV.

I have never had any issues with the time zone because i always manually update it to my time zone and select the manual daylight savings feature. I also use <time-c.timefreq.blddoc.gov> as my NTP server or <nist1-la.ustiming.org>. Both work and I have never had an issue once I set up that configuration. I did notice that the parental control feature would not work properly without manually configuring these options in the Adminstration/System tab. the time would not be correct without the settings I mentioned above.
