I posted this before but maybe this information could be used as a reference to the problems you are experiencing...I was having some problems with 5Ghz radio as well before upgrading to the latest firmware. A few weeks ago I started using a new wireless bridge (Trendnet TEW-680MB) with the 5Ghz radio in 40Mhz bandwidth mode and with the RT-N66U running official Asus firmware 3.178. After only two days the RT-N66U router was disconnecting and disabling the 5Ghz radio (2.4Ghz remained working) and the 5Ghz radio remained disabled even after using the firmware reboot option. Powering cycling the RT-N66U brought the 5Ghz radio back but I suspected possible firmware or firmware bug/settings issues so I installed the official Asus firmware version 4.220. After successfully installing the new firmware and then going through the basic setup I also did a 10-15 second hold down of the router's reset button (w/ router power on) with the hope of clearing the router of any remnants of its previous firmware settings. After configuring all my customized settings for the router and it's radios I seemed to have some trouble with my internet connection (wireless and wired). I found that I had to power cycle both the router and my DSL modem before the router established a good working connection with the DSL modem but it has worked flawlessly since then.
It has been more than two weeks using the RT-N66U with both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios broadcasting a connection continuously 24/7 without a single reboot of either the router or the bridge and I have had zero incidents. The wireless bridge is providing high speed connections to a PS3 and other audio/video media devices more than 60 feet (or about twenty meters from the router)...going through two rooms....passing through two walls in each room. I just looked at the TEW-680MB wireless bridge status page via the wireless link and the bridge firmware shows that the 5Ghz wireless connection has remained solid with the RT-N66U for 16 days, 11 hrs and 20 minutes as of this post. The bridge status also shows Tx 162Mbps, Rx 216Mbps.
