AC-56R 2.4 band speed issue

Plasman

New Around Here
Hoping I will be able to get some answers to an ongoing issue with my router.

To begin I currently have a 300/20 service from my ISP and when measured from my PC which is hardwired to the router I get on average 325/22 consistently. I have used both the Ookla speed test and also the one from DSL reports to check speeds.

I am having a issue however with the Wifi speeds I am getting from the unit, primarily on the 2.4 band.

I am measuring speeds sitting right next to the router. I have the latest Asuswrt firmware installed.

The highest download speed I have gotten as measured on my cellphone and tablet (both 802.11N) has been 45Mbps. My HP laptop also has the same result.

Using the same equipment but on the 5g band my speed averages 280/20. (Cannot use laptop, 2.4 only)

It seems to me that the 2.4 band speed (15% of my ISP provided) is way off, but I cannot determine if that is what it should be, and if not why is it so low. While the 5g band is great it is range limited and the signal strength is weak at a location I need to have service.

I have a netgear WiFi booster (2.4 band only) that improves signal strength but cuts download speed in half.

If the router is working correctly should I go with a booster that also work on the 5g band. Currently speed measured on 5g at the desired location is about 110 mbps but signal is weak measuring between -70 and -80 dbm on Wifi analyzer.

Thanking all in advance for any thoughts and suggestions

Those speeds look correct for 2.4GHz. I've just checked it here; with my phone which has 1 internal antenna I get 47Mbps, with my laptop that has 2 antennas I get 100Mbps.

Both tests were done approx 3 feet from the router.

Do some reading on Google about WiFi speeds.
