AC56U not recongnizing 2TB USB3 HDD to USB3 port

My Seagate 2TB is formatted to ext3 and it doesn't recognize my AC56U's USB3 port. Somehow I plugged it in on the USB2 port and it does recognize.

I tried plugging a USB2 16GB stick on the USB3 port and it also mounted. Seeing the log nothing happens when I plug the external HDD to 3port.

This happened when I flashed back to Asus orig firmware 374_34 to fix my 80Mhz channel width on 5GHz then came back to Merlin's 374_33. Before flashing to orig firmware, my HDD is still working with the USB3 port.

Solutions for this problem? Thanks guys.

Right now I have my WD 1TB 2.5" hdd usb3.0 on the 3.0port with NTFS filesystem. Should I still format my 2TB 3.5" to NTFS or stay on ext3?

For sure I will wait for a firmware update.

Always go with ext3 if making the disk Linux-only isn't an issue for you. NTFS should only be used if you need to plug the HDD to a Windows PC USB port.

Why is this? and Linux uses ext4.....so why use and old file system

Arn't these things meant to have regular hdd's and flash drives plugged into it.....most come formatted as exFAT or NTFS.

NTFS works fine for attached storage form a router.

NTFS is a proprietary file system so you have to license it from MSFT or use a 3rd party driver, which Asus does, at a performance trade off (IIRC).

If you search for Merlin's posts w/ "NTFS" keyword I've seen him break out the details a little more in other posts.

I cannot answer why ext3 vs ext4, but would speculate that one of the major reasons ext4 is utilized when it is, is based on its ability to handle massive files & drives that aren't going to be utilized in a home sharing via router scenario.

He asked between ext3 and NTFS, which is why I said to go with ext3.

ext4 isn't supported on all routers. The RT-AC56U does support it however, while the N66/AC66 do not, due to their older kernel.

Ext3 is not an issue for me as I'm running a Ubuntu VM on my Win7 machine. Right now I'm using the USB3 2TB hdd in the USB2 port and getting about 30% less transfer rate compared to the USB3 port.

In my OP, why is that I didn't have that issue when I got the router, updated to Merlin's and plugged in the external hdd?

Asus recently added a new USB3 Interference Reduction option, which is enabled by default. That option didn't exist in the original FW for that router, and isn't fully compatible with some hard disks, in which case those HDDs won't be detected at all when connected to the USB3 port. Go to Wireless -> Professional, and on the 2.4 GHz page disable the USB3 Interference option. Try again with your HDD on the USB3 port afterward.

It worked! Thanks.

It means the next update will have compatibilities with most HDDs?

This is something they are still working on. Part of it can be fixed by them, but another part of it is outside their control - some hard disks don't like being connected to a USB3 port and being told to downgrade to USB2 speed (which is what that option was doing).
