AC66U for non AC devices?

Occasional Visitor
Looking at replacing my wrt310N. It is in my basement (near ceiling), and I can barely get a signal on most devices when on 2nd floor directly above it. Weak signal to mobile devices are the main issue, but obviously none of them are AC devices. They are all 'n' devices.

My router essentially has to stay in basement for physical reasons. I need my workstation to use copper. But I suppose the other option would be to use a switch (already have one) upstairs with a wire going to workstation, and one to a cheap 'n' acess

So wondering if an AC66u would improve my wifi experiences on android/iphone/blackberry devices upstairs here? Or would I be better to go with the cheaper access point option.

Thanks,
~S

ps - each floor of my house is likely only 650sq/ft. As it is 1300sq/ft 2 story.
edit - sorry, should have posted this directly in the ac66u forum

You will need to have a USB 3.0 802.11ac adapter to really take advantage of the speeds .11ac promises. Many companies are shipping USB 2.0 based 802.11ac adapters and you cannot get 802.11ac speeds with those. That is false advertising.

11ac, or 11n routers or APs do nothing to improve performance of devices that do not support those standards. In fact, they sometimes ca use problems due to incompatibilities with older devices.
