AC66U rebooting at rc_service

When I reboot the router I get this message in the log before my internet connects:

This repeats a couple of times until it finally connects and logs:

And immediately the router reboots itself, wlan is lost etc, and starts again.
This happens about 3 or 4 times in a row until it logs like this:

And it works normal for days, without any reboots or whatever.
This happens every time I reboot the router myself.
Does anybody know how to find the problem? Or narrow it down?

What firmware version are you using? Your ISP may have changed something on their end and a new firmware may fix this right up.

You may want to unplug the modem for a few minutes (at least 10 minutes) and turn off the router too with it (and leave it off).

Turn on the modem and let it idle for a couple of minutes, then turn on the router and see if the same thing happens.

Do you have HW acceleration enabled? You might try turning it off (or on...) as a test.

I was asking about the firmware version of your RT-AC66U.

What do you mean 'duplicate address'?

AC66U is running RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_374.38_2
With duplicate I meant:

It shows a few times, then the router reboots.
Until finally the "rc_service" logs, about 20 mins later.

Maybe the 20 minutes is the time your ISP needs to be disconnected to properly recognize your connection?

How long did you leave everything unplugged before? Was it longer than 20 minutes? (I leave my modem off for an hour when things are really buggy).

I havent unplugged anything. It happens when I reboot the ac66u. Afterwards it gets connected, even logs wan restored. 5 second later the lights on the ac66u go off and wifi drops... then reboots.

I think I'm understanding what is happening - but I don't think you're trying any of my recommendations.


Let's try again in this order:


Go into the RT-AC66U's web gui and write down all your settings that you need for your setup.

Now; remove any USB cables and/or devices from the USB ports.

Remove all Ethernet cables except for the one that is going to your computer that you're managing the router from.

After you have completed the above, in the same web gui do a restore to defaults in the Administration section (left hand menu item) and the Restore/Save/Upload settings tab across the top.

After this step has completed (the router may or may not reboot by itself - be patient): pull the power plug and wait a couple of minutes before you power up the router again. Do not do a 'Reboot' from the web gui; pull the power.

Leave the router idling for a couple of minutes after you power it up, without plugging anything into the USB ports enter the web gui and manually enter the settings you copied down in the first step.

After this is completed - either go to each client device you have and 'forget' the network connection with the old ssid and password combination (and then re-associate each device) - or; simply use a brand new ssid to use for both bands.

At this stage; the router and your clients are now fully running on a 'clean' copy of the 374.38_2 firmware.


Connect your other devices one by one, testing as you go.

If everything works properly now, you may want to change your settings for the best results possible for you network.

Note that although the router I'm using is different from yours; the settings suggested have been used successfully on an RT-AC66U and an RT-AC56U (customer's routers).


Take the above slow and methodically - and I'm sure you'll either solve your issue or find the step where it begins to show itself (and then, we can help you further from there).

No more "duplicate address" now, but ipv6 stopped working.
Same for qos, when I tried to import my qos_rulelist, it only showed web in the rules, nothing else. Disabled qos for now.

Reboots are gone, why, I dont see it. I did a factory reset at RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_374.36, it seems I need to reconfigure all after every upgrade.

Ipv6 is A bit problematic still, only thing logged is:

Traffic monitor is going wild as well, download 110GB in 12hrs according to it.
I read that is was due to half open connections?

Did another full reset, only configured pppoe and wifi, then set ipv6 straight to dhcp_pd.
5 seconds later ip address was there, but ipv6 still does not work.
When I ping ipv6.google.com, time-out.
Do I need to enter any special bypass, or how to diagnose this?

Same issue, also I believe this isnt unique to merlin firmware.

So previously I was using RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_374.35_4 and ipv6 worked perfect.
Now I flashed RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_374.39_0 and I have prefix length should be 64 errors.

My ipv6 is configured to use Native,PPP and DHCP-PD

The reason I believe its not unique to merlin is on my isp another guy upgraded the plain asus firmware to latest and his ipv6 died. He didnt go into specifics tho other than to say it stopped working. I will post back if I find a solution.

Sadly I ended up downgrading my firmware, I have concluded its a bug.

I may try intermediate firmwares between the 2 to see where the bug got introduced.
