AC68R time not sync'ed and network pings result in "non reachable" message.

I have been trying to get the VPN client on my AC68R with Merlin 380.65 to work but I suspect the problem does not lie with the VPN client. The router is behind a Verizon G1100. For all intents and purposes (mostly) it works as it should. In trying to diagnose the VPN client issues I discovered that the NTP server has not been sync'ed but I don't know if that's a problem or not. Worse, when I go to network diagnostics and try to ping someone, like Google, I get the "Network is Unreachable" message. The DNS on the ASUS is set to the Verizon router i.e. 192.168.1.1 Apparently (a guess) DNS inquiries from the #2 router are not being processed even though DNS inquiries from farther down stream are being processed. Any ideas would appreciated.
