AC68u and iOS Devices

I have a Linksys WRT 1900ac and Asus RT ac3200 routers. Since I was unsuccessful to get the AC3200 router to operate smoothly with my iOS devices, I switched back to WRT router. I don't have a single problem with the WRT router and iOS devices. I like the built in features that come with the Asus routers. I would like to go back to using the Asus router.

The original problem that I was having while using the AC3200 router was this, frequently, I was getting STOPPED (err = -3295) network connection reset. To try to fix this issue, I tried multiple options. I tried setting the 2.4 and 5 band channels to either higher or in the middle depending on what my neighbors were set to. I tried the Asus stock firmware and Merlin 56.2 firmware. For about a week but less than two weeks, I was using Merlin 56.2 and it appeared to be stable and my iOS devices were not getting ANY wireless disruption or error messages when I would download a iOS app. After about two weeks, wireless disruption and the error message would appear. I didn't experience any of these issues when I was using the WRT router. I knew that my issues where Asus router and/or firmware related. Now, I have been using the WRT router without any wireless disruption or experience any STOPPED error messages on my iOS devices.

I don't want to give up on the Asus router because it has more beneficial features than the Linksys WRT router. I was thinking about buying the AC68u router and see if this router works better with iOS devices and to see if I experience the same issues.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions regarding the AC68u and iOS devices?

I've got a RT-AC68P and use 2 iPhones, one on 2.4 and the other on 5 and have never experienced any issues...

Thanks for the reply. How do you have the 68 configured? Please provide as much detail as possible. You have not experienced any STOPPED error messages or network connection reset? Are you using all of the features like Parental control, Firewall, etc.. on this router?

Just to be clear, when you take your iPhone and download an iOS app, you experience no delays or error messages when connected to this router?

I am using RT-ac68u with ipad, iphone and Apple TV and haven't experience anything like what you described. Though I haven't use parental control.

Hawk~ Thanks for the reply. Do me a favor, enable parental controls and restrict access to your iPad. Use the time schedule and block sites to it. How do you have your 68 configured? Try to be detailed as possible. Using your iOS devices, you don't have any wireless interruptions or receive any error messages when you try to download an App? Which firmware are you using, Asus or Merlin?

I am using Merlin 380.57 and will give it a try.

Is there specific site you want me to block or just in general. Also it will big help if you describe in detail what you are trying to achieve.

Only change to default configuration is that I have enabled native IPv6, disabled uPnP, enabled adaptive QOS with manual bandwidth setting, changed the default password and setup 2.4 and 5gHz wireless connections with WPA-2 Personal Authentication including a 1 2.4gHz guest network connection.

There are no issues whatsoever using either iPhone ever...

edit: I don't plan on experimenting with parental controls. If you feel that may be your issue, I suggest disabling the option and testing without it. Also, I am using the latest stock firmware.

Hawk~ Again, thanks for the help and cooperation. This is my original post when I was using the AC3200 router.

I have a AC3200 router running 378_9313. Can someone explain to me why I can 't download a 15mb file either wireless OR wired. I can surf the internet without any problems on ANY wired or wireless device. When I go to download a simple 15 mb file, I'm getting the STOPPED (ERR = -3295) message about the network connection has been reset. The file will start to download and get to about 13mb and then die on me. That is when I receive the error message.

I have rebooted the router and that didn't resolve the issue. This router has become unreliable if I can't download a small 15mb file. Perhaps, I have QoS configured wrong. I have Adaptive QoS and web surfing as the highest and file transfer as the lowest. My router sits in the garage with the modem and a Vista computer and a Mac Mini. These computers are WIRED. Also, I have a Airport Time Capsule and Airport Extreme both are WIRED connected to the router. Inside my house, I have an Apple TV 3 and a Airport Express WIRELESS to the router. I have a printer and a Mac Mini connected to the Airport Express. Also, I have an Xbox 360 and iPhones. My kids have iPods, Kindle Fire and laptops which are WIRELESS connected to the router. They surf the internet and watch Netflix.

Last night, on my Mac Mini WIRED connected to the router, I tried to download a 20mb file and got stopped with the same error message. There was no other traffic on the router at this point and time.

At this point, I feel it is router that is causing the problem. Here is why.

Last week, on this router, I was running firmware 378_7838 and I was faced with the same exact problem. I called up Asus and the tech guy told me to factory reset the router. Ok, so I did reset the router back to 7838 stock firmware. Next, I proceeded to upgrade to 378_9313 and EVERYTHING was working fine. I was able to download a 20gig torrent file AND I was able to download a 20mb iOS app. I was doing this while other devices were on and connected to the router. Later on, that evening, I took out my iPod Touch to download an iOS app. This iPod is WIRELESS connected to the router. That is when I found out that I was facing the same exact problem AGAIN. So, here I am with the exact same problem that I can't download a 15mb file on 7838 firmware AND I can't download the same file on 3913 firmware.

I didn't experience ANY of these issues when I was using the Linksys 1900ac router. I had the same exact set up as I do now. The only difference is, I changed the routers.

It appears that performing a factory reset TEMPORARILY fixes the download file problem but I can't reset it each and every time I am faced with this problem. Frankly, I shouldn't have to reset anything only configure this router.

Since the last post, I installed Merlin 378_56.2 on this router. Everything appeared to be working just fine. I did run a tool to determine which channels my neighbors are on and adjusted the 2.4 and 5 band channels accordingly. I was getting good speed and surfing the internet wasn't a problem. I was able to download torrent files and I was able to download an iOS app directly from my iPhone. Everything appeared to be working as it should be.

BUT......

About a week later, I started to experience some of the same issues AGAIN. I started to experience the STOPPED (ERR = -3295) messages on my Macbook Air and Apple devices. I noticed the same recurring issues on my WIRED Mac Mini. But I was able to download a torrent file on my WIRED Vista computer.

I rebooted the router unplugged anything of non importance. I connected my Macbook Air to the router and tried to download an iOS app and still the problem continued to persist.

I turned off the Asus router and factory reset my Linksys 1900ac router running 1.1.10.167514. I have ZERO problems with this router and any Apple products. Right out of the gate, I am able to download torrent files and iOS apps to ALL my Apple devices. I am able to download iOS apps WIRELESSLY on my Macbook Air and iPhone without any issues.

The Linksys router is in the same location in the garage where the Asus router was located. On the Linksys router, I have the 2.4 and 5 band channel set to AUTO and I don't have any issues.

I don't understand why I have so many issues with Apple devices and Asus router. It appears I have less issues with Linksys router and Apple devices. I would like to use the Asus router for the AiProtection, Traffic Analyzer and Firewall features but not if I will be experiencing issue with my Apple devices.

The above was from my original post asking for help with the AC32oo router. Eventually, I gave up using the AC3200 router for the reasons stated above and nobody could explain why I was having so many issues with this router and iOS devices. In terms of the blocking sites, just block FB and Youtube on the router to affect iPad. Don't forget to set a time limit on the router for the iPad. Let me know what your results are.

Okay, Let me start with one step at a time. I will do QOS first and see if file download halts.

Are you trying block FB and YouTube for certain amount of time?

Hawk~ I am sorry about hitting you with a lot of information at once. Take your time and try to recreate everything that I was doing and give it a week to see if you encounter the same results and give me your update. I had AiProtection, parental controls and time schedule and Traffic Analyzer all enabled. I think I turned off QOS with everything else on. Also, I am running 9.2 on most of my iOS devices and Yosemite on my MBA and Mac Mini. I had turned off any other access points such as Extreme, TC and Airport Express and it didn't make a difference.

Like I said, do want you need to do and give me an update in a week.

With the Firewall enabled, I have entered keywords such as FB, Youtube, Instagram, etc.... and I have FB, Youtube, Twitter, etc.. all URL filtered on the Firewall. For the individual devices and laptops, I have Pornography, gaming, etc.. checked on the specific devices to be blocked. I don't have any of those sites blocked for a period of time. I only have iOS devices and laptops blocked for time.

Okay, I Will test it out with Rt-ac68u, I already Traffic Analyzer and AiProtection enabled and so far no problems. Will try with all of them and see what happens.

On the iDevice - reset the network connections, and give that a try...

Settings - General - Reset - Reset Network Settings...

The iDevice will reboot, and you'll have to enter the network credentials again, but that'll likely solve your problem.

SFX2000~ Thanks for the response. By trade, I am an IT guy and although routers and wireless are not my strong suit, I tried everything that I could think of including performing a reset of network settings on my iOS devices. I tried various firmwares including Merlin 56.2 and Asus stock firmware and nothing was stable after two weeks. I disabled most of the features including Firewall, AiProtection, Adaptive QoS and Traffic Analyzer. I could not narrow anything down to a setting or something enabled. I never had the "gotcha" moment like this setting, XYZ, is causing the instability. I gave up and decided to go back to the WRT router where I have ZERO problems with iOS devices. I concluded it had to be either the router itself or the firmware.

We've got an AC86U and before that a N66U and never had any problems with various iOS devices on Merlin or john9527 firmware.

MarkyPancake~ Thanks for the response. In what capacity are you using the 68u router? How do you have it configure and are you using all of the features? You have not experienced any wireless interruptions or delays on your iOS devices? At least in my experience, I had problems when I tried to either update an App or download a new App directly on my iOS device. I would see the round blue circle start to download and get about half way around the circle and stop. I would get a message popup saying something about a network timeout. I tried both the 2.4 and 5 band and I would still experience the same issue. That is my experience with the AC3200. Maybe it is different with the 68u router.

Have you checked regulation mode and beamforming settings, as these can affect iOS devices.

Have you checked regulation mode and beamforming settings, as these can affect iOS devices.

I disabled the Explicit beaming and Universal beaming by disabling both settings on both 2.4 and 5 bands. It didn't make any difference. It didn't resolve the issue. Since there wasn't a switch to enable or disable Regulation Mode, I telnet into the AC3200 to adjust this setting and it didn't appear to make any difference either. The problem with telnetting is I didn't get any "successful or unsuccessful" messages. I just rebooted the router and was hopeful the change was there.

Hawk~ Since we last spoke, what is your results? Just to recap, graciously, you agreed to turn on most of the features (Firewall, AiProtection (Time Schedule and Web filter), Traffic Analyzer) on your router to test the wireless connection on your iOS devices for a period of time. The purpose for you to enable those features is to test the wireless connection on any iOS device and to see if you are able to download an iOS App or update an App directly on the iOS device without having any wireless interruptions or error messages. Again, my issue was where I can take an iPod Touch connect to the AC3200 but I can't download an iOS App or update an App directly on an iOS device. The app would start to download and stop for no apparent reason. I tried EVERYTHING to resolve the issue. My conclusion was this, it was either the router itself or firmware.
