Ac68u ui - not a pretty sight

compared to the Linksys wrt1900 GUI which almost lured me into buying one ! So is there a 68u firmware that has a nice looking GUI or are they all bland ?

I dont see anything wrong with Asus GUI but to each there own and yes all Asus routers have the same theme in there GUI's

That's a pretty subjective opinion, because in general a lot of people actually prefer Asus's webui of that of most other firmwares out there.

I would hardly call Asuswrt "bland looking" considering the high amount of CSS and images it uses. In fact it's suffering more from lack of uniformity and simplicity than from being bland.

I meant bland as in too much grey, colours could be a lot more vibrant. ASUS could throw in a few more colours to make it easier on the eye. Linksys wrt1900ac GUI is much nicer to look at & I was tempted to buy one based on that - but I think a made a better choice for performance & features - ASUS ac68u. I was tempted to upgrade to the 87u but the hardware layout is rubbish & probably not much improvement in performance for the extra $$$

I understand what you mean by bland. Unfortunately, it's a very subjective opinion. Some people think that darker tones look more high-tech than bright colors (look at Windows 10 as an example, where Windows now offers a dark theme for its taskbar). You won't find a design that will appeal to everyone there.

The WRT1900AC might look brighter, but having spent some time with it back at the time, I found it a bit confusing to navigate. Some settings weren't obvious to locate.

Likewise, a lot of people hate the DD-WRT interface, while personally I kinda like it (at least on a visual level - the settings layout could use some improvements IMHO).

I'm sure I don't use the ASUS interface as much as others do, but I think it's the best of the bunch.

(Out of Asus, NetGear, D-Link, Linksys and other (lesser!) routers).

It's a subjective thing. And as long as the colours used don't obstruct the usability, buying a router because of 'nicer GUI colours' seems like missing the purpose of a router...

I like it the way it is. It's not distracting. The color scheme has good readability in day and night time.

Srsly?

With no disrespect, this isn't like wallpaper. You're not going to be staring at it hours of the day. The most important issue is whether you can get the tasks you need done, without it being complicated or unintuitive, and whether the hardware works.

There are UIs that I would not choose due to the above reasons, but the lowest thing on my list of whether I'd buy or not buy a router would be "The interface colors are bland".
