Accessing static IP

A co-worker has a static IP address at his home. When we try to access his address from a remote location we are asked for a user name and password, we've used the info he uses to access his email etc. but no joy. What should we be using? maybe the router info?

It depends... Chances are it would be the password for the router as that is generally the first device that would allow remote login. That is of course only if you have enabled the option to manage the router remotely. The other options are if you have setup port forwarding on the router and are forwarding a connection to a certain computer in your network. In that case you might need a specific user and password based on whatever service you are trying to connect to. For example I can set my router to forward port 3389 to my Windows Server here at home. This allows me to connect to my home server using Remote Desktop.

If you don't mind me asking what is your goal when trying to access your static IP?

He is trying to access a folder on his desktop at home and would like to eventually access a lan camera. I think he came to the wrong guy for help as neither of us are familiar with port forwarding etc. We'd be glad for a tutorial on the subject. If you need more specifics just let me know.

Jeez Louise. The last thing you want to do is forward ports for Microsoft networking. This will get you hacked within minutes.

For secure remote access use a solution like LogMeIn, GoToMyPC, or set up a VPN.

Accessing a LAN camera is different and safer. But would still require port forwarding unless the camera vendor provides a hosted web access solution.
