Adaptive QoS - Questions

How do I enable Adaptive QoS? All I see in there is Smart QoS in the settings.

Thanks

Not available on the AC66U....only ARM processor based routers.

Then why is it that in many of the descriptions it says Adaptive QoS for the Merlin Builds? From a quick look at the wikidev (spelling) website they (All current Asus Routers) are all Broadcom or Quantenna (spelling again) CPU's from the looks of it.

So then why add in the changelogs info about Adaptive QoS if it will only work on Routers with ARM processors?

Thanks.

As a side note, what Asus products are ARM based because I'm not seeing any that are in the Wireless-AC range of models?

What problem are you having?

Standard QoS is more powerful than Adaptive anyway.

All (afaik) the newer devices are ARM.

So Smart QoS and adjusting the settings appropriately better than Adaptive?

If that is the case, what are some ideal settings for the AC66 + Current Merlin Build?

QoS is usually unneeded unless you have a problem, like VOIP latency.

Are you having a problem or simply looking to optimize your setup?

It's mentioned in the changelog because four of the routers that I support have Adaptive QoS support. All routers are based on the same source code, so they all share the same changelog.

Well we have been experiencing a lot of Streaming Issues lately and not sure if it was the Merlin 378.55 build that did it or what.

So between my wife and I, we had thrown out the option to purchase a newer router and using the current AC-66 as a secondary AP at the opposite end of the house to expand the range out to our patio so we can stream music while soaking up the sun.

But I had QoS enabled in the past, but it disabled the HW Acceleration so I disabled it long ago, but my understanding is the new firmware alleviates that problem and still allows the HW Acceleration to still be enabled. But haven't tried it yet as I'm not sure of an appropriate selection of settings to maximize the performance of the network.

Net Use (Order of Heavy Use at Top)
#1) Stream - Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Pandora, Spotify --> to --> Chromecast, Mobile, and Desktop/Laptops.
#2) Web Use
#3) Web Design - SFTP Use (Lots of small/large files)
#4) Torrenting - Linux Distro's, Blizzard Games (Starcraft & Diablo Updates), other legal uses. (This is utilized very very rarely, but it usually causes my router to freak out requiring a restart to clear out active connections that won't drop. May need to setup router with better settings)

Are you saturating your connection? QoS is primarily used to give priority to vital, low throughput services that suffer during periods of high connection utilization.

I'm not sure what you mean by saturating. But It's pretty much stock Merlin with a couple of Wireless tweaks to close off old B/G network devices. (No longer have any B/G devices in this household and don't care too much if a guest has an old device. I have a couple of USB WiFi N or AC adaptors lying around if they need it.

Saturated = during a given time-span, ~80%+ of your available internet connection bitrate is being used. In other words, maxing out your connection.

I'm working on a FiOS Fiber 50/15 Connection. I never really ran into the problem until more recently.

So either ((a)) there is some sort of connection degradation between the ISP and my network; ((b)) There is degradation between the ONT and the Asus Router (Connected via Ethernet); ((c)) There is issues with the Router; or ((d)) The introduction of Merlin 378.55 Firmware caused some sort of performance issues between the old Firmware previously on the router. (I didn't upgrade recently, but have had 378.55 since about 2-3 days after it came out, and the performance has been gradually getting worse since sometime around that timeframe.

To answer your question, there really is no time where I'm pegging the connection. Unless Netflix is hitting the 50meg peak, but I highly doubt that.

Most of the time if I do any sort of Bittorrent Downloads I usually throttle the connections both up and down so there really hasn't been a need to setup QoS or any other advanced features.

We also aren't doing any streaming and file downloading at the same time. It's usually a little web browsing at the same time as streaming.

My vote is either a local problem (misconfig, bad cable, interference, etc) or your ISP lacking bandwidth.

In my experience, the premiere streaming services have more than enough bandwidth and are rarely the problem.

So we ended up purchasing an AC68P from Best Buy for cheaper than the AC68 U or R (Yay, Pricematching) to upgrade our AC66U. I'll be using the AC66U as an AP on the opposite end of the house to expand our signal range. But in the mean time I'm just doing a One for One swap of the devices and want to start over with the settings.

Is there a recommended set of settings to start out with or a guide I can follow in setting up the Merlin 378.55 firmware build on the AC68P?

Thanks

Default settings are usually default for a reason. I once thought "default" meant "CHANGE ME" but I know act more conservatively.

So in a previous post you stated that Adaptive QoS isn't as good as another one, from your viewpoint what makes the newer version of QoS and the integration of Adaptive QoS as being subpar to the older version?

If anyone else wants to chime in on this as well that is fine. :-)
