Adding Guest WiFi?

Guz

I'm having a 'senior' moment.

I have a DSL/WiFi unit, and an extra WiFi router that I would like to connect to first unit and set it up as an open 'guest' WiFi hotspot. I also need to keep the 'guest' network clients separate from the original network.

The DSL/WiFi unit does NOT have a 'guest' feature built in.

How do I implement this? I've done this before, but I can't remember how I did it :( (I hate getting old).

Hi,

You could just use your first WiFi (the one with the built-in DSL) as a guest WiFi, then you plug the WAN of your second device in a LAN connection on the DSL/WiFi. This way, your guests are connected to the internet normally (obtaining an IP from the DSL/WiFi and all) and your network is behind the second router/firewall.

Just set the ISP on the second device to DHCP and let the first one provide the IP. Remember to change the subnets if they are identical in both devices. For example, you could use 192.168.100.0 in your first device and 192.168.101.0 in your second.

I would rather have the first WiFi/DSL be the in-house network, and the second router be the guest. Why? The WiFi/DSL is newer and runs better than the second/old router.

Also, I don't want to buy any more equipment.

Then I think you could just put your old one in the DMZ of you DSL/Wifi. The old one should still be connected using the WAN port so your guest are still behind a firewall. In this setup, use static IP for the WAN config of the old router, and enter an IP from you DSL/WiFi subnet (one that is not in the DSL/WiFi's DHCP scope). Then, enable the DMZ on your DSL/WiFi and put that IP in it. Again, in this setup, the subnets from each routers should be different.
