advice for network including voip, internet, devices, powerlink for 3-storey house

Currently we are running a wireless network on an old Linksys WRT54G router

it has worked pretty well for about 5 years but it is time to upgrade and I am needing to cover a few things:

need to create internet network for 3-storey house between 5-8 computers

also need voip phone line so may need an adapter plus dect phone or sip phone or, wireless jacks or ??

I have been researching and the more I read the more confused I am.

I was thinking of purchasing a wireless router (dual-band) and powerlink

I do not want too many extra devices if not necessary

is there a way to run voip off powerlink adaptor? or is an ip phone the way to go

I am trying to keep my costs down but do not want to end up with problems with performance

please advise on what devices and configuation is best for this

I dont want to invest in a higher end router only to find that it was not necessary... I see there is a Linksys E2000 on sale for $49 on Dell so that may be an option unless something else would be better?

oh and can we use the old router as an access point if that will help

thank you so much for your guidance

newb

You can use a powerline adapter to connect any Ethernet device. Think of it like an Ethernet cable that works through your home/apartment wiring.

Yes, you can use a router as an Access point. See How To Convert a Wireless Router into an Access Point

Why are you upgrading, i.e. what is not working in your current setup?
