Advice on selecting a NAS

New Around Here
Hi there, I've finally signed up after being a lurker for quite some time.

I'm very familiar with PC hardware and setting up home networks, but haven't had a chance to dabble in NAS as yet. I recently bought a 2MP security camera that is capable of recording H.264 video at 1080p and 30fps. From what I've read online, the minimum required bandwidth would be 4Mbit/s (or 500kbyte/s). I don't have any confirmation on that figure, so please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't intend to have a PC/laptop running 24/7 just for the sake of the camera, so that's where the NAS comes in.

Since I'm getting a NAS, I thought I might as well use it for other purposes too, i.e. storing and serving media files, and backing-up the PC HDD. I'm aware that the entry-level models have processors that are too weak for HD video transcoding, but that's not an issue. The laptop and PC will be serving that role. This essentially reduces the NAS to being just a file server for two clients. Obviously, the most important role of the NAS is to record the video stream from the camera. RAID is not considered at the moment.

So, what is a decent entry-level NAS that will suit my purpose? I was looking at the Synology DS213j, but it seems to be EOL and sold out in many places. I've read that the DS214se is only useful as a very basic file server. Could it cope with my camera recording and file server needs? The Asustor AS-202T seems like good value for money, i.e. better processor than the DS213j and comes with USB3 ports. However, it only has a 70mm fan, and reviews (for the AS-202TE) have shown the noise level to exceed 30dBA under load. That's far from quiet.

Any advice or recommendation? Thanks.

Cheers
