Ah ok, got ya thanks for the response....It's essentially very similar to the Windows firewall on your PC. Even if you haven't explicitly defined your own rules there is a default set of rules which will be created. The primary function of the router's firewall is to protect the router itself from attempts to connect to services on it from the WAN.
