All files on NAS are read only...can't change it

So...for some reason all my files on my Thecus n3200pro have turned to read only. I am logging in with a user that has full read/write control over the folder but when i try to change the file read only status i get an error saying "you need to be an administrator to do this" FAILBOAT. (i added the failboat part).

It was working pretty well and I have no idea what made it recently go read only on me but I can't use SyncToy to back it up because it can't make any changes to the files.

I am using Windows7 if that makes any difference.

I have disconnect the drive, rebooted all machines, made sure I am logged in with the same user credentials that I list in the user list on the Thecus for access to this folder...

no idea.

help!

thanks

Can you FTP into the directory and check the file permissions?

hmm...never tried to FtP to nas. Just browsed normally through network folders and can't change the read only attrib.

I'm worried that I FTP and can change permissions/attrib but then they flip back for some reason. Just not sure what messed it up in the first place since it was working great before

using a ftp connected to my nas with username with read/write privlages yet when i right click on folder, choose properties, and try to put in a check mark in "write" it gives me an error than i don't have permission.

hmm..

has to be on the NAS side right? some setting?

Sure sounds like it. Maybe file ownership somehow got changed.
Log in as administrator and check it.

I saw your dilemma and I can relate.

To cut to the chase, I believe win7 will adhere to the linux file permissions. Whereas previous windows versions will listen to the file permissions you set via a web-interface to the NAS (Something to do with samba, but I'm no expert).
I was able to telnet into my nas and set the permissions to read/write/execute for everyone.

I hope this helps.

booted back in Vista and i have the same problem...

uh oh... =)

so i think win7 really messed up the permissions on the NAS somehow.

so little self-update..

i THINK i know the problem and hopefully it helps some other people.

I store all my movies on my NAS but i initially rip them to my main computer. Then i transfer them to NAS. I then watch them on my HTPC in the living room.

what i did was setup the movie folder on the NAS to only be able to read AND write from the user on my main PC because I didn't want to accidentally delete files while watching them on the htpc. thus, set user on HTPC to only be able to read files.

anyways, i watched a few movies on my htpc awhile back and I was thinking maybe win7/NAS is angry that i am still connected as the read only user. WHo knows, but i went into the NAS and just completely removed that read only user leaving only the read/write user. sure enough, bam, i can add/delete files on my NAS again using SyncToy and basic browsing methods.

not sure exactly where the glitch is here but I guess I have to be careful about what users are connected at what time. annoying cause that's the whole point of having users with different levels of access!!

well, it's fixed for the time being at least. =)
