So, this is just a thread for anyone who has previously tried to use android usb tethering with asuswrt merlin and failed, and given up on their dream - i had tried previously and could not, for the life of me, get usb tethering to work properly.
So this time i plugged my galaxy note 4 into my asus rt-ac66u running merlin build 380.57, and ticked usb tethering, went into the settings and changed the type from usb modem to android phone, and BOOM! it worked beautifully. the speed was a bit less than what i see directly on the phone, but the fact that it works at all is a miracle. just thought i would share.
