Asus rt68u - can anyone advise how the antenna positioning affects the wireless signal and strength.

The maximum signal strength is at right angles to the antennas, so if all of the clients are on the same floor of a building leave the antennas all vertical: |||

The shape of the radiation pattern is much like a donut. This pattern assumes a vertical antenna (the "Z" axis):

You will, of course, still get some signal above and below the horizontal angle, just not as strong.
