any advice on inexpensive and fast gigabit switch

there are gigabit switches starting at $30 on newegg. an asus one sells for $30 there. and the price goes up to $100 even!

will appreciate any experienced views on this. thank you!

i am hoping that i can stick a gigabit switch behind a 100Mbps router and get gigabit connection speed between two gigabit devices.
so this is also a question in my mind.

Your title mentions gigabit router but your seem to be looking for just a gigabit switch so I will assume you just need the a switch.

To my knowledge most of the gigabit switches currently on the market will provide similar performance. The differences are the features and standards the switch supports. For example some switches don't support jumbo frames or have smaller packet buffers. The more expensive switches have more ports and some are managed switches which allows the switch to be configured in different ways. Generally for home use a standard 5-8 port unmanaged switch will work just fine. I currently use a D-Link DGS-2208 and have not had any problems.

As for hooking a gigabit switch up to your router... Yes this will work just fine. I have this exact setup at home. All of my computers connect to the gigabit switch and see gigabit speeds.
