Any experience with the Linksys WRT 32X?

Looking at some used ones, thinking about putting DD-WRT on it. Wac curious if anyone else has experience with this unit. Maybe considering at Netgear R7800 . 15-20 Wireless clients, three wired clients 120mb down/10 up. Currently running Asus AC-1900P which I am not convinced doesn't have issues.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Running the r7800 with hnyman openwrt. He has both stable 19.07 builds and master “bleeding edge” beta builds.

Moved from DD-WRT to OpenWRT - both are good, just found that I like the larger community / larger developer base of OpenWRT. R7800’s run great and would easily handle your network. Quality used r7800s run in the low $100 range.

I ended up getting an R7800 - using Voxel's latest build. How does Open WRT compare to Voxels firmware on thise routers?

OpenWRT offers more customization / advanced features and is based off the linux 4.14 or 4.19 kernel. OpenWRT allows smart queue management QOS on the r7800 and dramatically lowers your bufferbloat (you can see this on the dslreports speedtest). OpenWRT on a r7800 typically will cap out at about ~850mbps.

Voxel’s build is based off the OEM netgear firmware (with a couple additional features). It offers full use of all the proprietary netgear hardware acceleration and NSS cpus (offers full 940mbps speed of all the netgear proprietary software ). r7800 actually has two ARM 1.7 ghz CPUs and two NSS 800 mhz CPUs... openwrt is trying to crack the code on these NSS CPUs but everything is close source / proprietary.

For the speed of your WAN line - the difference in speed between the two firmwares will be pretty much nothing. It more comes down to what features you prefer and if bufferbloat is a problem for you.

Here are my dsl report results. Given the large number of clients I am not sure if maybe having the cpus running at fll steam would be better than the open wrt scenario. Thoughts ?

Yikes! That is a ton of bufferbloat. 20 wifi clients shouldn’t be a big issue with a r7800.

If that is what you are consistently getting with a wired computer I’d check your computer (better results with another computer?), cable modem (what type, how old, good signal on the modem webpage?, puma 6 chipset?), and wiring.

If all the above checks out I’d post a topic in voxel’s build threads to troubleshoot your configuration. OpenWRT is always an option. SQM QoS should work wonders on your bufferbloat and get you to A+ across the board.

I tested another pc and got similar results, I also plugged the machine directly into the cable modem and this was the result. I did notice that using Firefox instead of Vivaldi yielded a slightly different result.

If you are noticing lag with your internet use it could be worthwhile to see if there are any further tweaks with voxel’s build or trying something like OpenWRT that has good QoS to take the edge off that bufferbloat.
