Anyone Ever Try to Swap A Drive on a Iomega Home Media Network Drive?

Hangtime79

New Around Here
Wasn't sure if this belonged here are in DIY so...

Yes, I am very well aware that this not supposed to be possible, but I am kinda of out of luck at the moment. I purchased the NAS from Fry's in February 2009 and apparently did not register the product so instead of having a 3 year warranty - I HAD a 1 year. Now a month after I am out of warranty I got the click of death from the drive...bummer. Now I am sitting with a shiny case, a dead Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 that neither Seagate nor Iomega warranty, and nothing to lose.

I have no problem trying to drop in a new drive, but I don't want to do so if all the NAS software was stored on the drive and not on the board attached to it. (Good money after bad). That said does anyone know if the board was carrying the operating system for the NAS or if it was imaged on the drive and if it was imaged on the drive does anyone have a copy? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks
Grant

I would think as long as you had proof of purchase that you would be covered under warranty. Have you tried appealing this?

I'll check with Iomega about the drive replacement issue.

Tim,

I was quoted that in order to take advantage of the 3 year warranty, you had to register within 90 days.

And that info is clearly indicated on the product web page, I see.

Yea its pretty explicit. Actually I think its even been lengthed since I purchased the NAS. I keep all my boxes for gear (been burned before) and it states on the bottom of the box in small white lettering that it only has a one year limited warranty. Sad thing is that the drive if purchased from Seagate would have had a 3 year by itself. Another interesting thing was that the firmware type of the Seagate drive had been crossed out and had another number hand written on it. Again, won't fault Iomega they are within their rights to deny the claim - (and seemed to have lengthed the warranty period since I have purchased the product) but I am wondering whether to purchase an Ix2 or go with a Synology DS210j instead. I'm just tired of being burned by bad drives even when I buy a NAS to avoid and backup the data.

If you don't want hassles with drive warranties on NASes, buy BYOD models. With an ix2, you could end up in the same boat, although drive replacement is easier due to the easily-removable front panel.

Sorry, Hangtime. Word from Iomega is that the HMNHD won't initialize/prep a blank drive.

Iomega said they instituted the warranty extension to incentivize buyers to register their products.
