AP Mode of N66U throughput dropped dramatically...

New Around Here
Hello All,

New to the forum...hope you all can help.

Using the N66U as an access point, going through a Cisco RVS4000 as main router.

Speedtest speeds on all wired connections through the RVS4000 are 55 Mbps down, 11 Mbps up on a service of 50M down and 10M up from Comcast.

Recently, my N66U wireless speeds (Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) dropped to approximately 10 Mb down, and 8 Mb up, after being stable for over 29 days without so much as a reboot or dropped connection. The wireless speed before this issue was very consistent at around 48 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up (2.4 G) and maxed out at wire-line speeds (5G) during those 29 days. I was running stock 3.0.0.4.370_172.

I tried resetting, unplugging, etc. and the throughput seems stuck at this level.

I upgraded to firmware 3.0.0.4.374_257 and nothing has changed. I haven't tried Merlin's latest as of yet, but will attempt to do so later this week.

The wireless environment hasn't changed, signal strength on both bands is the same, very strong all around the house. inSSIDer doesn't show anything different from my neighbors than it was prior to the issue.

In the meantime, anyone have any other suggestions? Is this a firmware issue, or something else?

Thanks in advance.

Upgraded to Merlins latest...cleared NVRAM...

All,

I upgraded the firmware to Merlin's latest, cleared the NVRAM after a reboot by powering up while pushing the WPS button, reloaded my settings, and I still have the same problem.

Any ideas?....Anyone?

Delete and recreate the wireless profile on your computer. This is often needed when switching between different driver versions (like what you did when trying build 374_257 then reverting to my build, which uses the older 270 driver).

Hi Merlin,

Thanks for the feedback. I probably should have pointed out the following:

iPhone 4S (2.4G), iPhone 5S (5G), Dell Laptop (5G), HP 2540P (5G), Nexus 7 (2012) (2.4G) HP dm1z (2.4G) and various other phones, tablets and laptops all run within about 10% of the same throughput of 10Mbps down, 8 Mbps up.

I did reset the profile on my laptop as suggested, but no difference in throughput. Then did the same on my iPhone 4S, same result with no change in throughput.

Thanks for taking the time.

I'd appreciate any other ideas...I'm beginning to think this is some type of a partial hardware failure...?

Thanks Gonzo...

I will try that and test without any reloaded config file. Hopefully, that is it and I just need to recreate a new config file...though not looking forward to re-inputting all of the MAC filter information...

Thanks for the input.

all I do is open each page I need info from in tabs, that way you copy and paste the mac info back in after the nvram reset :)

I did a manual restore in 10 minutes that way ;)

In this case, it defeats the purpose of clearing the nvram if you reload your old settings. Resetting to factory defaults and reconfiguring from scratch is troubleshooting 101.

Solved...Thanks everyone for your input!

Guys,

I want to thank everyone who took the time to answer. Merlin, a special thanks to you for your great firmware, which finally gave me the clue I needed, that the Ethernet connection to my AP was not at 1000 Mbps, but slower... It looks like the short CAT5e cable decided to go bad. Your "network info" under SysInfo was an awesome add to the stock firmware that, iirc, didn't have this feature.

I'm back up and running...at the proper speeds, and a now "lifer" using Merlin's firmware. Keep up the great work.

Thanks again! :D

You're not the first one who was able to troubleshoot performance issues through that page. Glad you got it up to speed :)
