AP mode Question

I always see people say when a wifi router can no longer get security updates just use it as an AP in AP mode, my question is, is it still vulnerable on the wireless side or when it is in AP mode is all security including the wireless done by the router it is behind?

Is running an old ASUS Merlin Router as and AP a security risk?

I have a old RT-AC56U that is no longer supported, if I want to run it in AP Mode behind another router is it a security risk on the wifi side because of no updates?
