I recently bought an AX6000 from ebay.
Everything worked fine, but the firmware was outdated so first thing I tried to do was upgrade the firmware since it was on 3.0.0.6.102_21514
No matter what I did I could not get it to take the update. I tried the auto update from the UI, when that didnt work I tried to manually upload the firmware from the UI. I tried various versions, and I even tried the latest Merlin FW as well. It would just keep saying the update was unsuccessful.
I tried multiple times to do a hard factory reset with the WPS button. The factory reset would work but it would still fail to update firmware afterwards.
I also triple checked the model on the bottom of the router matched the model for the firmware files I am downloading.
Then I stumbled upon a thread in here talking about validating that the storage was writable and not read-only. (https://www.snbforums.com/threads/gt-ax6000-write-protected-aka-borked.90156)
However, I was able to successfully validate that the Volume was in a state of OK and was writable (`touch /jffs/test.txt` worked)
I then found a tutorial for putting the router in rescue mode and flashing the firmware manually that way.
I was able to get the router in rescue mode, and was able to ping 192.168.1.1 successfully, however when I tried loading the firmware via the Firmware Restoration Utility, it was not able to connect. Just kept saying "router not in rescue mode", even though it definitely was.
Well, I probably should have taken all these roadblocks as a sign from the universe to just stop trying. But I was determined.
I then switched to a different PC, put the router in rescue mode, pinged 192.168.1.1, then tried again. This time the upload worked!! However, when it was doing the upload I noticed something funny. The progress moved steady until it got to 55%, then the progress bar reset and it started over again, this time going up to 23%. Once it reached that, it said the upload was successful. I thought "huh, that was weird. But it says successful so I guess it worked".
After a minute the RGB light on the router started to pulse slowly, like it was booting up. Then the light turned solid for a few seconds, then the light turned off, then started pulsing again. It just repeats like this indefinitely.
I then tried the same process a bunch more times, using different firmware versions, swapping the ethernet cable, changing the port its plugged into. Everything gives me the same result. Just a boot loop. And it always does the weird progress bar thing.
I called ASUS support and confirmed the device is out of warranty.
I'm really hoping I didn't just flush $200 down the drain. Does anyone have any ideas or anything I can try to get this thing working again?
Thank you in advance!
