ASUS RT-AC66U High ping lag spike issue in games!

New Around Here
Hey guys!
I bought the ASUS RT-AC66U 3 days ago. During these past 3 days I have had nothing but trouble. Setting up the router was easy but everytime I try to play a game I get lag spikes every 10-30 sec! I checked my ping it spikes from around 30 average to about 150-500. I am running 5ghz.

First--wow at the interference. Three overlapping networks and a signal "score" of 45. Glad I don't have to deal with that kind of noise.

Second--are you sure you're on your 5 GHz band? I'm new to this, but from your screenshot it looks like you aren't. Make sure you assign different SSIDs to each band, and connect specifically to the 5 GHz band. It may be less congested (looks like it on you screen shot). I believe you can connect to the 5 GHz band with the xbox--it shows up on our external Xbox adapter anyway, with different SSIDs but we connect to the 2.4 band for range.

Third--What firmware are you running? Do you have the "optimized for xbox" option? Look around on this forum--I posed a link to the "3.0.0.4.372_0-ga8208f0" firmware which is the latest firmware from ASUS. It is not on their site. You might try that. I don't have it set myself but you might try it. We don't have issues with the Xbox on the 2.4 GHz band.

Move your 2.4GHz over to channel 1 - you have an 802.11b based HP printer/all-in-one camping on channel 10, and they jam the heck of 11g/11n - co-channel interference is a tough one. I'd like to seriously talk to someone at HP that made the decision for all their WiFi printers to default to channel 10 in adhoc mode if they're not set up to access an AP - very brain dead move...

Channel 1 is likely the best choice - remember, you only need about 20 dB better signal than someone in the same channel with a different SSID.

Also, if you haven't tried - instead of forcing 801.11n, try mixed mode - works much better if you have non-11n AP's/STA's in the area.

good luck - and worst case - cable up for gaming rather than WiFi... always better if you can do it.

Thanks alot for all the tips guys! I apologize I thought I was on 5 but I wasn't. I renamed my SSID for 5ghz and am now using it. Will report back later after testing it.

My firmware version is 3.0.0.4.270
I am not running an xbox but a pc.
I have now switched my 2.4 to channel one.

Hi,
OP mentioned he is on 5GHz and you are talking about 2.4GHz settings?

Go back and look...

OP highlighted, in his InSSIDer screen shot link, his 2.4GHz SSID - and it's been jumped on pretty hard by co-channel interference.
