Asus RT-AC68U Wired 600Mbps download, Wireless only 300Mbps

Hi, just to seek the opinions of the experts here. My provider recently upped the speed from 300 Mbps to 600 Mbps, which I confirmed with a wired connection to the Router. However, my wireless speed did not change at all, still at 300 Mbps. Anyone knows why? Using Asus RT-AC68U. I did try stock firmware and Merlin's firmware, no significant difference.

Can you check the link speed between the client computer and the router? If the client isn't close enough to the AP or it is using the 2.4Ghz band instead of the 5Ghz then the link speed might be the limiting factor.

Thanks, I did the speed test when the link speed is 1300 Mbps, so it does not seem to be due to the link speed between computer and router.

Maybe the router or PCE-AC68 isn't fast enough to perform the encryption at that rate.

As an experiment try changing the Authentication Method to Open and test again.

Did you do a reset to factory defaults and manually configure the router after switching firmware versions each time? Did you use a new SSID? Did you 'forget' the SSID on the client? Do you have the latest version / firmware and proper settings on the client?

Have you tried uninstalling (fully) the client and reinstalling the latest drivers?

Factory reset - Yes
After factory reset - default SSID
Latest version/ firmware - Yes
Uninstalling and reinstalling client drivers - Yes

Result - Still 300 Mbps no matter what I do, linkspeed fluctuates from 877 to 1300 Mbps on 5 Ghz.

It sounds like your client is too far.

And; try changing the SSID (unique for each band).

I am using unique SSID. Connected to 5 GHz with linkspeed of 1300 Mbps typically at 80 Mhz. Difficult for me to understand why I can achieve a link speed of 1300 Mbps if the client is too far away...

Link speed is no indicator of the link quality (I'm talking about actual possible throughput).

How far away is the client and what obstacles does the signal need to overcome?

The client is just 4 metres away from the router separated by a approximate 20 cm thick wall.

Before trying to diagnose the Internet speed test issue you should run a test on your local network to see how fast your wireless transfer speed truly is (ex. plug a gigabit client into your router and try a file transfer to your wireless ac client). If that still gives you 300 megabits then it means you're hitting the maximum speed with that router / client combination. The next steps would be to try a different AC client to see if you get better results.

Link speed is not a true indicater of real world speed. It's more of a theoretical best case scenario which you're unlikely to see outside of a test lab.

That's a pretty thick obstacle to get through on the 5 GHz band, which is far more sensitive to obstacles than the 2.4 GHz band.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I did a wired speedtest to the router and obtain in excess of 600 Mbps download which is correct. So I ruled out that my internet provider was shortchanging me. The upgrade was from 300 Mbps to 600 Mbps. When it was 300 Mbps, I was getting speed test speeds of around 300 Mbps wireless from the client, I just cannot understand why when the speed has been doubled, my wireless speed test speeds remains at 300 Mbps and not 400 - 500 Mbps at least (assuming I will not be able to get the full speed due to wireless limitations)?

Do you think it would make sense to test with my Samsung S5, since my laptop is not 802.11ac compatible?

Weird.

I just did the speed test again. This time was forced to use different server as my provider server is missing.

On Samsung S5 in the same room with router, download was 300 Mbps, upload 100 Mbps.

On my client 4 meters away separated by 20 cm wall, download was 550 Mbps, upload only 180 Mbps. Link speed was 1300 Mbps.

What gives? I am really puzzled now....

You have a phone with a much slower CPU than a desktop. Speed will rarely get as high. Those devices are also optimized for low battery usage rather than high performance. The same is noticeable with my Nexus 9, its speed is nowhere close to that of my laptop's Intel 7260AC.

Sorry was not being clear. I was not referring to the difference in wireless download speed between my phone and desktop as weird.

I couldn't get more than 400 Mbps when doing the wireless speedtest using my internet provider's servers, but I when I change to another internet provider's server in the same country, I can get 550 Mbps using wireless connection. Actual wired speed around 600 Mbps.
