Solved Asus RT-AC86U - how to set up Admin Access

malefilefu

New Around Here
Hello All,

I would like to set up Diversion on my Asus RT-AC86U, however I can´t seem to figure out how to access the Router as admin.
I did a factory reset, once I connect to the router again, whether via LAN or WiFi doesn`t seem to make a difference, the welcome guide asks me to set up a network e.g. my PPOE credentials and all that and then it asks me to set up an account to access the router.
That access works, so with 192.168.1.1 I am able to login to the router and change whatever you can change via the web GUI.
However, in order to install diversion, I need to ssh as an admin but if I try to do that, I am asked for a password and it is not the password I used for the user I created.
So apparently, with the initial setup, I created a user which does not have the admin rights but I dont see where in the initial setup I can decide whether I get admin rights or not.
And btw. I tried all the typical combinations of admin:admin as user and password, or admin: password, root:admin, root:root, absolutely no chance.
Anyone has any idea what I am doing wrong?

Oh and yes, SSH is enabled, LAN only tho but still no luck as I dont know how to get the admin rights to my own device...feeling slightly stupid ngl

Thanks in advance!

Welcome. Note that there is a Addon's subforum where such discussions about addon scripts are normally created. There is a dedicated Diversion topic in that subforum as well.
After you enable SSH in the router's GUI interface you use the same router login information as the SSH user name and password.

Okay, I was actually even more stupid than initially thought....
The problem was that I actually created that user in the beginning with a different name than admin and when trying to ssh as admin, well it doesn't work.
I did a factory reset, created the login user as "admin" and now it works.

Even though it's a bit embarassing, maybe it does help some other people :D
