Asus RT-AC87U Network Loop or Flood - Driving me Insane!

Hi All,

I'm now on my second RT-AC87U. I'm trying to use it in place of my previous RT-AC66U and RT-AC68U.

I'm using the RT-AC87U as a wireless access point and NAS on an LAN IP address of 192.168.3.2.

My main router is a Draytek 2860n on 192.168.3.1.

Every few hours, my internet connection virtually goes down. My switch shows heavy traffic between my router and the RT-AC87U. This is when there is only background wireless traffic from a couple of android devices. My main wired internet goes down.

If I turn off the RT-AC87U or disconnect the LAN cable, access to my router is restored.

I've tried the RT-AC87U in both AP mode and router mode (with DHCP turned off etc.)

Any suggestions please? I have the latest firmware and am really exasperated at how unstable this thing is.

Many thanks,

Andy

Check your AC87 network log. Does it contain a ton of "received packet with own address as source address" errors?

Do you have SSIDs set up the same on both the Draytek and the AC87? If so, try changing them to different SSIDs.

No, I have no other SSIDs of the same name, thanks.

I have seen those messages before, but not at the moment. I'm getting a few "miniupnpd[603]: sendto(udp_notify=6, 192.168.3.2): No such device" messages.

I've tried just about everything I can think of.

I have found that in Router mode, with DHCP disabled, the unit seems to run cooler with the WAN plugged in (using a second subnet from my router) and the stability seemed a little better, but it still loops and crashes.

I'm now trying another experiment which is to connect the RT-AC87U via an intermediate switch - just a basic desktop gigabit switch. Previously the RT-AC87U and Draytek were connected using an HP1810-24G V2 SMART switch.

If this solves the problem the only big difference I can see are the LLDP packets the HP will be sending out. All of its other functionality including EEE and LACP are turned off.

Thanks for the reply.

If you use the AC87U in access point mode, make sure you choose DHCP, as static IP does NOT work on this firmware. In addition, try to avoid LAN port 1.

I've noticed the static mode doesn't work in DHCP. I've been using an IP bind on my main router to reserve the IP.

Using an intermediate switch and 8 hours now without a crash....
