I see that I can update the router through the smart phone app.

How are we supposed to access the update menu to apply the fix?

Clear the browser cache and off line content. Worked for my AC66U.

Doesn't work for 88u. No matter what browser I use the result is the same. I can clear everything out and enter in privacy mode and it still tries to update the firmware just as soon as you click on the firmware update page tab. When I first updated to this firmware I didn't see this behavior. I wonder what changed to cause this?

Could you try the step as below
1. power reboot 88u (Not Reset Default)
2. click Administoration -> Firmware Upgrade
3. Don't click "Check" button
4. Manual Firmware Update..

I have the same problem. Really odd, as soon as you click on the Firmware Upgrade tab at the top of the admin page, you get a screen that looks like it's updating the firmware, but really doesn't do anything.

Edit - The reboot did the trick and fixed the problem

Rebooting allowed me to access the update firmware page without the update behavior. Thank you Arthur for the information. I also notice that new firmware light is flashing a the top of the page.

Edit: About that new firmware notification. If I click on it and then the upgrade now link it will scan for new firmware and return that I'm already using the latest version. Wait a few seconds and the new firmware notification will start blinking again. I'm hoping that the router support page will show the new version soon where I will manually download and install it across the lan.

I had test and my results is normal. According you can't access WebGUI, I think you can't send the cfg file to me. Could you try to reset default by Reset or WPS button?

Do you have a link to it? The asus router page still shows the old version under all OS versions.

EDIT: Never mind it just showed up under 32 bit windows.

I was able to reboot then immediately apply the new firmware through the gui.
