Asus RT-AX68U USB tether problem

Wish to use my Android phone tethered via USB to this router. Setup proceeds fine up to the point of activating USB tether on the phone. When activated on the phone the phone disappears from the Merlin web page. Watching the Network Map page, when I turn off the USB tether the phone pops back as a USB device, and when I turn on USB tether the phone instantly disappears.
Any ideas?

On your phone, try turning the USB tether mode on before connecting

Did try as suggested, Nokia 4.2 AN10 Nokia 5.4 AN10 & 11, Moto G Power AN10 & 11, exact same problem. Got out an older NUU flip phone and it worked on first try. Really strange problem.
