Asus RT-AX82u AIMesh Issue

Ripface

New Around Here
Hi All,
Got a bit of a weird issue with my Asus RT-AX82U Router. I wanted to extend the WiFi in the house so purchased an RT-AX52 and set it up as a mesh node. It was a bit far from the RT-AX82U so it's got a 1GB Ethernet connection and I configured that as the backhaul. It appears to be setup correctly and is showing in the AIMesh screen on the Gui .... but in this screen both routers are showing 0 clients attached. On the main Network Map screen it shows 49 clients!!

Now I don't know whether clients are connecting to the main router or the mesh node. Anyone seen this before and can suggest a fix?

Main Router is running 3004.388.9_2-gnuton1
Mesh node is running 3.0.0.4.388_33911

Cheers,
Ripface

Do you have Ethernet Backhaul Mode enabled? If so, go back to the AiMesh default settings.
Let the router and node figure out the best connection

If your ultimate goal is AiMesh - run stock Asuswrt firmware. Or at least test with stock Asuswrt and see if the issue is present there too.

Hi, will give that a whirl! Thanks!!

Will stock firmware still allow me to leverage openvpn for my VPN connection? (Using NordVPN)

If you are happy with reduced bandwidth, increased latency, extra payments and increasing Internet use inconveniences when going through public VPN service - Yes.

I don't use public VPN services. I use NordVPN. Yes, it does reduce bandwidth ... but I'm not a heavy user so the security is more important to me.

Tried to install the latest OEM firmware and it fails every time. Not sure why, I checked the download and the checksum. Any ideas?

Make sure you download the correct file:

You have to un-ZIP the archive, the firmware file is the one with .W extension inside.
If you can't flash it in GUI for whatever reason Firmware Restoration method will work.

Ok, I've switched off ethernet backhaul. No change
I've restored the router to the latest OEM firmware. No change

RT-AX82U 3.0.0.4.388_25035
RT-AX52 3.0.0.4.388_33911

The AIMesh still reports 0 clients connected to both the RT-AX82U and the RT-AX52.

Any more ideas peeps?

I ran into the same issue recently after getting my new BE88U. No matter what I tried, my AX88U Pro mesh node with Ethernet backhaul never showed any connected clients, even though I knew they were connected. I even ran signal tests to confirm they were actually using the node. Eventually, I just decided to live with it.

Later, I had to do a factory reset for an unrelated reason, and after that, everything started working properly. I’ve found that the mesh system can be a bit flaky at times with things like this.

Once all my clients were finally showing up, the mesh map started telling me my third node was daisy-chained through my AX88U Pro — even though both nodes were directly connected to the main router and on completely opposite sides of the house. It eventually corrected itself after I installed Beta 3 of the latest firmware. Since then, everything has been rock-solid.

Hi, yeah ... I think when I first added the AX52 to AIMesh it did show connected clients ... but then I enabled the Ethernet Backhaul and since then nothing!! It's weird that it's showing 0 clients for both the primary router and the mesh node. I'll maybe try the factory reset of both devices and start from scratch. Ho Hum!
