[ASUS RT-N56U] - How do I max out 2.4GHz on 40MHz?

Equipment
  • Cable modem: Motorola SB6141
  • Wireless router: ASUS RT-N56U latest stock firmware

Configuration

Using inSSIDer 3.1.2.1, I'm the only one on my channel (8) and not overlapping anyone else. With 40MHz, inSSIDer is displaying my network is on (8 & 12)

Issue

I'm on Comcast Extreme 105 trier at 121/23Mbps wired. On the other hand, my laptop (has a 2.4GHz AR9485 wifi card) maxes out at 80/23Mbps. What can I do to improve this?

First of there is no channel 12 in usa, 11 being the highest channel. Set preamble to short, tx bursting to on. Also while inssider shows you your neighbouring APs, who it doesn't show you is other devices using the same band which includes microwaves, cordless phones and bluetooth. If the above doesn't improve the sitation, try padavan's firmware. And if that doesn't help you are SOL annd need to switch to 5GHz band

No. There are more channels higher than 11 but it is unlicensed band. Read.

Set preamble to short, tx bursting to on.

Testing this now...

This is a known fact.

My other two HP laptops are connected to the 5GHz 40MHz getting full 121/23Mbps. So no problems there

1. There are 14 channels in total. Different channels are available in different countries. I guess I just assumed you were in USA where channel 11 is as far as it goes. Channel 12 is available in low power mode only so most manufacturers just don't make it available.

2. Might/might not help.

3. Glad that you know it. Since I have no idea what you know or what you don't know I mentioned it anyway.

4. Of course there is not problems there.

Update.

With TX Bursting enabled - it was worse. 61 Mbps instead > 80 Mbps. I'm going to keep it turned off.

Another question.

Do I need to change anything in my wireless properties? I hate the lack of options in this wifi card

Thank you very much

There may be a better driver available with more options: http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-drivers.html if it causes problems just revert it.

You shouldn't change these options, as they really wouldn't do anything (except for tx/rx buffers which should stay default). Drivers linked above may have more options, don't know for sure as I don't have any atheros card, nor windows anymore.
