Asus Rt-N66r Slow speeds

Braun0521

New Around Here
so i bought this recently but this is my second router,First one had a power issue but ran perfectly fine with speed,I have charter spectrum and was getting 110+mbps on the 5ghz and around 85-95mbps on the 2.4ghz band. But once i got this the speeds declined horribly,I can't run past 25mbps on the 2.4 band and wont hit past 40mbps on the 5ghz band! Hard wired i'm only getting 50mbps but directly to my modem i'm getting 130mbps. I'm on firmware version 378.9529,I've tried going to merlin but that didn't work,Tried different channels to no avail. Any reason this could be happening? Btw i'm running a laptop,2 galaxy s6 active's,xbox one and a nexus player.

Have you reset to the Factory Defaults?

Nevermind there back down, it worked for maybe an hour or so. I'm just gonna take the router back and get a different n router or go back to an ac router which I don't want to do cause the speeds were worse.

Can anyone recommend any good N routers? I wanted to stick with N because my XB1 communicates with it better then it did with an AC router and for some reason had better speeds.

None better than the still supported RT-N66U. (RMerlin, john9527 or hggomes firmware highly recommended).

But bang for the buck, the RT-AC68U is a much better router in every respect.

What AC router did your XB1 not like? And how had you set it up when you found the performance worse than (which) N class router you have now?

Trust me I know the n66u is the best It was amazing at first till my speeds were dropped so badly otherwise I would have kept it I can't seem to understand why they did, And I had the netgear R6400-100NAS. I pretty much just set it up outta the box which could have been my problem, But the 5ghz band with my XB1 just didn't perform well and the speeds were under 30mbps and anytime my XB1 would turn on it would disconnect all my other devices on the router. 2.4ghz band was giving me about 65-70 but then I switched to the Asus and speeds were incredible and it was much more stable with my XB1 and the speeds were in the 90s on the 5ghz band with it and I never had a problem with disconnecting up until two weeks ago that changed.

Just out of curiosity, have you checked the traffic monitor on the router when everything should be idle?
