Asus RT-N66U 5 GHZ issue

New Around Here
Hello

I have an issue with my connection...

I have recently bought the N66U router and have set it up, with both the 2.4 GHz and 5ghz bands having the same ssid.

The problem is that when I first connect my laptop to the router it automatically connects to the 5 ghz band and I get 75mb internet speeds. After leaving it on for a while and using the laptop in the morning I notice that the speed test speeds go to around 60mb.

When I check the connection it shows that it's connected to the 2.4 ghz band which is why the speed goes down.

When I disconnect the wireless and reconnect from the laptop the speeds are back to 75mb and it is connected to the 5 GHz band.

I wonder why it switches bands from 5 GHz to 2.4 and doesn't go back to 5 GHz...

My router is 6 feet away from my laptop and in the same room.

Is this an issue with the router or laptop, or is this normal?

I appreciate any help

Thank You

I would say it's normal: use different ssid's to select which device connects to which band.

Thanks :)

Actually I've found an option on my laptop which lets me select 2.4 or 5 ghz, so I have set it to 5 GHz and I'll see how it goes.

Do you mean preferred band setting or turn off 2.4 Ghz or 5 GHz radio. Either way, IMO it's not normal. I connect to 5 GHz with the same SSID and if I leave my laptop for more than 8 hours, it's still connected to 5 GHz as well as getting its full Mbps speed.

Yes, on the Intel wireless menu there were 3 options which were auto, 2.4 GHZ and 5.2 GHZ. It was set on auto at first but I have set it on to the 5GHZ band.

Do you know why it would do this if it isn't normal?

I have a Dell XPS L502X laptop with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 adapter

Intel probably setup their power saving feature to roam to 2.4 GHz if left idle for a while. My laptop uses an ASUS mini pcie WiFi adapter and it does not roam to 2.4 GHz even when idling for more hours.

How did the preferred band setting go?

Yeah I was thinking maybe it could be the power saving, but could not find any settings to change that.

The preferred band setting worked fine, but it looks like it is sorted now even if I put it on auto mode. I went in to the router settings and changed the wireless mode setting of the 5GHZ frequency to 'N only' ...

and now it stays on the 5GHZ band.

Thanks
