Important: After installing this firmware, we strongly recommend performing a factory-default reset to activate every new security adjustment.

Security Enhancements
- Password Policy Upgrade – Minimum of 10 characters, including at least one letter, one digit, and one special character; disallows consecutive identical characters; hardens defense against brute-force attacks.
- HTTPS on 8443 – Management interface now served over TLS by default.
- UPnP Disabled – Universal Plug and Play starts in the off state for reduced surface exposure.
- AiCloud Authentication Hardening (CWE-287) – Added layered verification.
- Authentication Logic Refactor – Removed redundant code paths for a lean sign-in flow.
- Memory Safety Guard (CWE-476) – Introduced null-reference protections across critical services.
- Enhanced IPsec Parameter Validation – The existing input checks have been hardened.
- Data Exposure Mitigation (CWE-200) – Reinforced controls on sensitive pathways.
- Detailed Audit Trails – Expanded logging within the authentication module.

System Improvements
- Connection Stability – Core algorithms refined for steadier links.
- Scheduling Accuracy – Timed tasks execute reliably under PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP WAN modes.
- Client List Maintenance – Resolved an issue that prevented offline devices from being removed from the client list

Just checked Asus' website today and saw this update, I was just about to post about it but you already did, thank you @fruitcornbread

Not yet available through the router's FW upgrade page though.

Have you tested it yet? Users of other MediaTek-based Asus routers mentionned they were still experiencing asset loading issues on webpages over WiFi. I do not have high hopes, to be honest.

I'll try it and report my own findings. This upgrade requires performing a factory reset in order to fully apply the new default setting values to improve security, meaning that all settings have to be manually entered after the upgrade and factory reset, as applying the settings file from an earlier version would overwrite those settings and would cancel some of the security improvements.

[Edit]: I am just done installing it, performing the factory reset and setting everything back manually, it does take a while. I will be testing the new FW and will figure soon enough whether I experience the type of issues we have been experiencing since back in March with FW 3.0.0.4.388_33903

@Nickos did you perform the factory reset after the upgrade? Seems to be important to apply new default values to some existing/new settings. Applying an old settings file just won't cut it: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/faq-nvram-and-factory-default-reset.22822/

I did perform a factory reset and changed all the settings manually again.
I first had to manually "save" my settings by making screenshots.
It is a bit of a pain, depending on the number of manual DHCP leases/clients you might have, and VPN connections, etc.
When I was done, I saved the new settings file that is now specific to this FW version, so that I can switch back and forth between FW versions if needed (I kept a settings file from v3.0.0.4.388_33427).

Now on to testing over WiFi tonight!

Unfortunately, I think you will have the same problem based on the posts that have the same 33950 firmware RT-AX59U and TUF-AX4200 in their respective threads.

RT-AX59U users downgraded to 3.0.0.4.388_33407
TUF-AX4200 users downgraded to 3.0.0.4.388_33506
TUF-AX6000 users downgraded to 3.0.0.4.388_33427

I checked the firmware for each model above and it seems like they are all based on kernel 5.4.225 found in TRX file > lib > module. Firmware newer than the version above are based on newer kernel 5.4.246, but I'm not sure if that means anything.

@ArturiusA mentioned that ASUS uploaded a unreleased 33957 firmware for TUF-AX4200 on their WebStorage which mentions downgrading sdk to v7670 on the title. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but hopefully that will fix it.

Thank you @fruitcornbread
I was aware of a couple of reports regarding 3.0.0.4.388_33950 on 2 different devices (all MediaTek based of course), mentionning the WiFi slugginess issues were much reduced but still present, but those reports were not very detailed, so I would rather make sure for myself.

I am also aware that a beta 3.0.0.4.388_33957 was released, but I do not remember reading much feedback at all about it.

Nice finding regarding the kernel version. Could be the root cause of the issues. The point is that Asus apparently still was not able to fix it 7 months later! 🙃

I installed it this morning. So far so good 😄
24 hours in and so far so good for me too, but I remember the issues appearing quite some time after a reboot with previous versions.
I need to monitor the behaviour over the next few days before I can draw any conclusion.

Anyway, should it happen with this version too, it will be very easy to spot, as the behaviour really resembles DNS resolution issues (slow or failed DNS resolution). I went crazy troubleshooting my network and especially my PiHole setup, thinking it was the culprit!

These are the posts mentionning persisting issues, regarding other routers with the same FW version 3.0.0.4.388_33950:

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/a...-0-0-4-388_33950-2025-09-09.95658/post-968952 : same issues (although heavily mitigated) appearing after 48hrs or router uptime on Asus AX59U.

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/a...-0-0-4-388_33950-2025-08-22.95530/post-967905 : Unclear description of this FW version having the same issues as previous releases on Asus AX4200.
v 3.0.0.4.388_33957 beta mentionned as being available on Asus Webstorage for the Asus AX4200. No test report is issued though.
