This firmware version is working well here, stable and good performance. Have passed the point in time where I expected to see at least one short internet disconnect. I'm not using fronthaul MLO, but the wireless backhaul MLO is working great and gives speed at the remote node very close to ISP speed for wifi-7 devices. Best firmware yet. Previous version of firmware worked well in AP mode, this one is doing great in router mode.

Update: Now at two weeks of uptime with no problems in router mode. I give this firmware a solid "A" grade at this time. So does the buffer bloat speed test, but that may be more due to our ISP (and DOCSIS 3.1).

Sounds like you've selected DFS channels on the 5ghz band(?).

To elaborate a bit more. After any change which requires internet restart like setting up a new static address. The connect to the internet can stay disconnected for a long time. Sometimes up to 10 minutes. The router just doesn't get external IP address. The light is red on the router. This was not the issue on my old RT-AC88U.

This is a known issue with some newer Asus routers, particularly the AX/BE series. A few things to try:

Most likely culprit — WAN DHCP behavior:
The newer Asus routers handle DHCP lease renewal differently than the older RT-AC88U. After a reboot, the router may be waiting for a full DHCP discovery cycle instead of quickly requesting its previous lease. Try these:
1. Set the WAN DHCP query frequency to "Aggressive Mode" — Go to WAN → Internet Connection and look for DHCP query frequency. Switch it from Normal to Aggressive if available.
2. Manually set the DHCP client ID — Some ISPs respond faster when the router identifies itself consistently. Under WAN settings, try setting the DHCP client-id to the router's WAN MAC address.
3. Disable IPv6 temporarily — Some routers stall on WAN connection while trying to negotiate both IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously. Disable IPv6 under IPv6 settings and see if reconnection speeds up.
4. Check if the ISP modem/ONT needs time to re-register the MAC — If the ISP device (cable modem or fiber ONT) caches the MAC of the connected device, swapping routers or rebooting can cause it to take time to re-authenticate. Try power-cycling the modem first, waiting 30 seconds, then powering on the router.
5. Reduce WAN MTU slightly — Try setting WAN MTU to 1492 or 1480 instead of auto/1500. Some ISP handshakes stall on MTU negotiation.

The fact that the RT-AC88U didn't have this issue strongly suggests it's a DHCP negotiation behavior change in the newer firmware/hardware platform rather than an ISP-side problem.
