the USB file system mode of consumer WiFi routers will probably be unsatisfactory on all brands/models... unless all you want to do is plug in a FAT32 thumb drive and backup or share a relatively small amount of data.

Unix metadata and DOS metadata don't match up. The metadata I'm referring to is commonly referred as "DOS Attributes". An explanation of the differences can be found here: SAMBA File Permissions and Attributes on MS-DOS and Unix Which is where I believe the errors is coming from, the translation and preservation of the "DOS Attributes".
