Before going to Merlin, questions... (added additional questions)

Hi,

I just bought the Asus RT-N66U. I upgraded to the 3.0.0.4.354 beta firmware, but seem to be experiencing some of the 5GHz problems I've seen mentioned on the forums here. I wanted to try Merlin's build, but had a few simple questions first:

1. Latest stable is marked "3.0.0.4.270.26", the download page lists "RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_270.26b.zip". The "b" after the 26 makes me think this is a beta build. Is it? Or is it the latest stable?

2. Does the 5GHz problem exist in the latest Merlin stable?

3. I think the answer here is "no", but does the latest stable have the WOL tool?

4. Just a comment/suggestion: The stealth mode for the LEDs actually sounds useful to me. Can you schedule it? That is, have the LEDs turn off every day from 11pm - 8am.

Thanks.

The "b" means "revision b". Anything beta will always be in the Beta directory on Mediafire.

The 5 GHz issue is specific to build 354, which uses a new wireless driver. 270.26b should be perfectly stable.

WOL support was one of the very first features implemented in Asuswrt-Merlin a year ago :) So yes, any of my build will have it. It will be located under Tools. While not the same as Asus, it mostly works the same way.

Thanks, RMerlin! The WOL was why I went to 354, so glad to see it in the Merlin builds.

Update: VPN questions (you guys are fast)!

5. PPTP still available in Merlin? I know it's not as secure but it's so dang easy. If yes, can the password field allow more characters (is this an artificial limit imposed by the stock Asus firmware or a design of PPTP)? Or possible to use EAP-TLS instead of MSCHAP? And what is the chance of an IPSEC or L2TP server on the router in future versions?

Thanks again. I'll probably put the Merlin firmware on later after everyone is asleep and give 5GHz a chance again.

PPTP is still there, with no change to its functionality. OpenVPN is the alternative that I support, and recommend people switch to it - I consider PPTP to be a legacy feature, and have no plan to do any work on it at the moment.

If you still want IPSec, you will have to install and configure it manually through Entware.
