Brand new ASUS RT-N66U help

I just bought an ASUS RT-N66U and want to use the Merlin firmware. I have not set up the router yet. At what point during the set up do I flash the Merlin firmware?

I came across this set up guide for the RT-N66U.

I don't understand step 8, logging stats using a USB flash drive. Is this something that is commonly done? Can I skip it?

Flashing merlins FW is pretty easy once u completed wouters instructions.

- Download it http://www.mediafire.com/download/uk5ufoo8iao7xcj/RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_374.35_4.zip
- Unpack it
- From your browser, go to http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_FirmwareUpgrade_Content.asp (change to your IP accordingly if applicable)
- Click "Choose a file" and navigate to the FW file you just downloaded
- Click "Upload"
