buying new nbn modem router

I have an Assus rt ac 88 u I usually get about 45 mbs download speed except when going through a VPN then it drops to about 5to10 mbs is that normal or is there something I can do about it

Take two.Can anyone help me to pick a new Assus modem /router.I am on nbn with TPG Cable.

Alternately can someone help set up a two router system .One using a VPN and the other without a VPN.My end goal is to be able to stream US content on one and local (Australian) content on the other simultaneously.
