Cake is Disabled, even though it is Selected

I've run into this with previous Merlin f/w versions, but since it is happening with my AX86U Pro with 4.4, then I thought I'd post to see if there is a solution.

I have Cake enabled in the QoS screen.

Sometimes when I go to the CakeQOS_Merlin screen, I get this that says Cake is not running:

Yet when I go back later, or if I disable QoS then restart it, it then shows the Cake is running with the categories:

Those parameters are well within my bandwidth.

So, is Cake really getting disabled periodically? If so, why? Should I be running a user script to check the Cake status periodically, every 5 min, and enable if it is disabled?

This is an odd issue...by any chance do you use spdMerlin? I think this used to be an issue previously while using this script. I doubt this is related to your issue though.

No, I do not use spdMerlin. Like I said, I should have reported this with previous Merlin versions, but I have seen this issue for a number of previous releases.

When you see that message, quickly login to the router over ssh and run tc qdisc and post the result. Also check the system log if anything else is logged at the time.

Most likely it’s an Addon issue, not a firmware issue.

I just saw the message again when I went to the CakeQoS-Merlin tab. But when I went to check it again, the message was gone and the screen had the QoS stats as is normal. At that point, I ran the tc qdisc command, and here is what I saw. But this might have been too late to capture the event. Still, does this tell you anything?

Notice the 2 cake entries. The 1st time I ran it, it did not have those entries.

After getting this result, I ran it again, and the entries were gone. Then I went to the CakeQoS page, and it said cake was not running. Then I did it again. tc had the 2 cake entries, and CakeQoS showed the status page. Hmmm...

BTW, I have also noticed that sometimes when I run the tc command, I only see 1 of the 2 cake lines. Other times, I see none as above, or I see 2.

If you think one of the other scripts is killing cake, I suppose I need to shut them off one-by-one to find the baddie. But is there another way?

Look in your system log for any entries about bwdpi. I suspect when you navigate to the Adaptive QoS tab, the Bandwidth Monitor page opens and restarts the firewall or qos if Trend Micro is not enabled.

I started disabling add-ins to see if any might cause this problem. I started with renaming connmon so it would not run. So far, after about 4 hrs, every time I go to the MerlinQoS tab, I see that cake is running. Also when I run the tc command, there are always 2 entries in that table for cake. So maybe that add-in is the problem. I'll continue to monitor it.

Ok, it looks like connmon has an “exclude from QoS” option that will stop CAKE while connmon is running. You can turn that option off if you want the rest of connmon.

Thanks, that makes no sense, but I'll toggle the option and monitor what it does. Thanks for your help in sorting this out.

Why do you have a Cake menu tab and I don't???

(Note that Cake is disabled in that pic, I was testing some things out, but the menu is missing even if it is enabled).
