Check for update not working...

Hi, I have the RT-AC86U. When I click the check update button, it states temporarily unable to get the latest firmware information. Anyone else having this issue? It’s been going on for days... I’m a little paranoid because recently my system just got hit with ransomware.

Download last firmware from Asus: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-AC86U/FW_RT_AC86U_300438481351.zip
disconnect everything from router
make factory reset with intialize on your router
update firmware manually with upload
then factory reset again
manually setup and dont use stored config!

Good lord! What caused me to have to do a reinstall like this? Do you think this was due to the ransomware attack?

What Ransonware attack? Multiple reasons why not able to check for a firmware update. One of them is that there may currently and is not any firmware updates available from ASUS or RMerlin.

You are the one that said you were hit with a ransomware attack

The advice given is a prudent precaution to ensure there are no remnants and the router was not compromised, even though it is unlikely it was the source. No harm in ensuring the security of your network. Also ensure the basics such as a strong admin password, disable configuration via the WAN, etc.

Once you are sure your router is protected, start looking at your other devices to see where the attack came from.
