Cold Garage

Does anyone in the northern US have a router set up in their garage? I'm thinking about putting one in my parents' garage, but I'm a little nervous about the high and low temperatures. This would be part of an AiMesh network, to extend the network out to the patio. I could probably bring it inside in the winter.

Not living up there but was curious so was trying to get an Asus link to show the source but seems there is an issue with Asus websites atm.

ASUS operating specs say room temperature between 0°C and 40°C (32∘F to 104∘F).

You might want to consider an Outdoor Model if it freezes in there ?

Models like the ASUS ZenWiFi BD5 Outdoor operate from -30∘C to 60∘C (-22°F to 140°F).

Heat is the enemy. With cold, you are more concerned with condensing moisture out of the air onto the motherboard components and shorting something out. Just get an ourdoor rated AP and hang it under the roof eave of the house. 2.4GHz will go a long way. Ubiquity has several

Instead of a mesh network consider just buying an outdoor AP and install it on the exterior of the home or if you want in the garage. Connect it to their primary network using Ethernet or if you must Ethernet over powerline. Even then the exposure to the temperature swings and humidity in a garage or outdoors will probably mean it won't last more than a couple of years, but it will do better than a router designed for indoor use.

I have my router and server set up in the garage. Mine is an old house and it's not possible (without a considerable expense) to get the ONT and cabling moved. So I have the router in the garage (cinder block walls, concrete base, no insulation), and have had this setup for the last 11 years. I have started off with the original Verizon FIOS modem, then the RT-AC86U and now the RT-BE88U. Ran Cat6 from the garage to two end-points within the main house and have setup an AiMesh. The router in the garage also transmits WiFi which is used by the security cameras, car, charger and other IoTs. Have had zero issues. I am in Westchester county, NY. So it does not get really cold, though this winter was about -20F for a stretch.
