Coming from Netgear R6400, which Asus Router Should I go to?

New Around Here
My Netgear R6400v2 router is only giving me 1/2 of the speed of my Modem's 575mbs. Not that I plan on keeping up with my Internet provider, but I realized its time to upgrade.

But I wanted a router's firmware that gave me options like setting DNS entries, etc. That is why I ran DD-WRT on my Netgear router.

However, I want to go the Asus route now and would sure appreciate some recommendations. I looked at the Asus RT-BE92U BE9700, but I see too many bad reviews about overheating CPU and connectivity issues. There is also the Asus RT-82U BE6500.

Any recommendations that would put in me in good standing with using Merlin as well as not putting it out of my price range, but not something to near the bottom?

Look at this forum section, multiple threads with recommendations:

Nothing much changed in last 6 months with exception we now know MLO is mostly used for advertising purposes. Whatever was broken is still broken and depending on your use case you may need to find workarounds. If QoS is one of the features you need - look elsewhere, still broken. Perhaps the best price/performance ratio router on the market is GL.iNet GL-MT6000 with OpenWrt base firmware and vanilla OpenWrt available. I don't know your location, but it's $136 on Amazon US right now. Good luck!

Used to recommend the AX86U Pro or AX88U Pro. But those are hard to find these days. Search for something Asus WIFI 6 (AX). Stay away fro the WIFI 7 routers unless you really need WIFI 7.
