Hi All,
2 issues, i'm on _5 and things are working fairly well - definitely faster than my wrt54g ( and much more flexible) but significantly less stable.

My 2 issues are related. An earlier post of mine brought up that my core was pegged @ 100%. The fix was to turn off DLNA, which helped! However, I still get 100% peg just not ALWAYS, but almost always.

When I ssh in and run top i see that the core is not @ 100% as stated by the giu. Can you guys help spot the problem?

What router? Have you reset to factory defaults and then manually enter only the required settings to secure the router and get you connected to your ISP?

Thanks for the reply.

This is a N66R. I bought it turned it on, played with a few things, then installed Merlin.

Should I really factory reset it?!

Yes, I would. Depending on which firmware it was shipped with. But it seems like it does need it.

Thanks. 2 Questions:

1) What led you to this conclusion?
2) What is the most effective way to reset this router?

1) Your indication that it is unstable was my first sign.

2) From the GUI, go to the firmware tabs and chose reset to factory defaults.

Just to help you close out the other part of of your question.

Unfortunately, top doesn't give you a total, just the pieces....so

CPU: 36.7% usr 26.3% sys 0.0% nic 0.0% idle 0.0% io 3.5% irq 33.3% sirq

is really
36.7% usr
26.3% sys
0.0% nic
0.0% idle
0.0% io
3.5% irq
33.3% sirq

add 'em up and you get 99.8%

Guys, thanks for the replies.

I reset the router and redid all the settings - I'm still pegged @ 100%.

Is it possible that the 1.5 TB drive is somehow really taxing the router?

I'm concerned that 1) I will have a hardware failure if I continue to run this router @100% 2) that I am not experiencing an optimal network due to the CPU load

All,
I am now on the newest release .50 . Same problem continues. I have a 1.5tb drive attached through USB. I have noticed that if I unplug it my cpu demand drastically falls. Is there something I can do to optimize my drive ot help the router mount it without all this incredible cpu load?

Thanks,
Zhenya

Disable all unneeded features.

It seems like you are experiencing a DLNA/UPnP glitch. There are lots of threads on this topic (high-cpu usage related to drives filled with network-available media). I have not experienced this bug myself but it usually seems to be related to the scanning of the media files for cataloguing purposes.

0.0% nic
0.0% idle
0.0% io
3.5% irq
33.3% sirq

add 'em up and you get 99.8%

...or, more simply, subtract "0.0% idle” from 100% to get the total. :p

:)
