Currently using an RT-AC87U and an RT-N66U, should I replace the 66u with another 87u?

Hello, I'm currently unable to go with a wired setup so I turned my old RT-N66U into a media bridge and have it connected to my desktop. The 66U is connected wirelessly to the RT-AC87U which is two rooms over. Signal is good and when test speeds from my desktop, I pull around 170Mbps. I have COX 300Mbps service, but I don't think it would ever be possible for me to pull close to that, perhaps I'm wrong though?

Both routers have Merlin's latest firmware build, but I've been considering replacing the 66U with another 87U to get 4x4 mimo. However, I learned that the 66U has 3x3 mimo, unless I'm wrong. It does not have AC.

In my situation, is it worth it to replace the 66U with another 87U? When I play GTAV or other games, I find my connection stutters...or drops occasionally. Otherwise, browsing the internet and doing general things is an O.K. experience.

Still, would it be worth it? I'm trying to justify dropping cash, but would like to hear from you folks first.

Latest RMerlin's firmware (380.61?) on both. Did you perform a full reset to factory defaults on both routers afterwards and then manually and minimally reconfigure them afterwards?

Note that you may need to do some or all of the suggestions in the links above (possibly multiple times, it has helped some users repeating a firmware upgrade or resetting to factory defaults again).

If you have done the above (or can't be bothered)? A newer router than an RT-N66U will easily give you more throughput than that almost 5 year old design can.

I would suggest an RT-AC68U over an RT-AC87U though (or better yet, an RT-AC1900P from BestBuy, if you have one in your area).

Correct. I'm on 380.61 on both of my routers. Nope, I have not done any kind of reset of factory defaults. I've flashed and rebooted, then gone on with things. Never once I have I performed a kind of full reset to factory defaults and then performed any kind of manual minimal reconfiguration. Perhaps I should now though since you mention it. I take it I should be pulling more than what I am during speed tests.

I'd love to get one of those RT-AC1900P routers, but money remains a problem as always, for me.
