Devices randomly disconnect from WiFi

RLC

New Around Here
Been using the RT-N66U for about a month now and, with the exception of what I'm about to discuss, all is well.

At what feels like random intervals, all devices will be disconnected from the wireless network. The SSID and 'full signal' icon remain visible in all devices (Windows laptops, Android phones and tablets) immediately following the disconnect, but they cannot reconnect for around thirty seconds to a minute.

Typically, devices will lose their connection once every hour. There was, however, a period of about a week during which the connection was uninterrupted.

Set up details:
3.0.0.3.178.15 (Merlin build) -- I have also tried the two newest ASUS firmwares; the problem still occurs
  • WPA2 Personal
  • Jumbo frame disabled
  • HW accelerator enabled
  • Firewall disabled
  • UPnP disabled
  • 80mW radio transmit power

Nothing of interest appears in the general log following/preceding the disconnects - only DHCP renew requests (which would happen anyway following the clients reconnecting (?))

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, although I've looked through and tested so many settings it feels like I may just as well be requesting an exchange with Amazon for another, and try it.

Thanks,
RLC.

It is quite possible that the problem is not coming from the ASUS router...
It could be some interferences that come from some other devices (either yours, either from your neighbour).

Maybe you should look at the situation keeping in mind your immediate environment ?

Is your control channel set to auto or have you set a specific one?

It is set to auto. There are only two other wireless networks my devices detect from neighbours. These are on channel one, while NirSoft WirelessNetView tells me mine is using channel six. Often these other two networks will not be detected by my devices, although whether they are or not does not effect the disconnection issue.

Try different settings. I personally only use 20mhz width on the 2.4 band. Also are you using inssider to check actual free channels? Also try Merlin's newest.

I would still set it to a fixed channel, either 6 or 9, just to ensure that the router doesn't randomly decide to jump channel for other reasons (remember that wifi is just one source of potential interference in the overcrowded 2.4 GHz band).

I would also recommend upgrading your firmware - the one you are using is quite old.

Apologies for the late response but thank you! Since simply changing from auto to channel six, my connection hasn't dropped once.

Although being old thread, I'd like to add, that in my case (376.49_4 and 376.48_1) similar issue was fixed by _not_ having same SSID on 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. Changing radios to fixed channel didn't help in my case.
