DHCP Issues

Have an n66u router that has worked flawlessly for weeks and all of a sudden two days ago none of my wired or wireless devices can stay connected. The issue seems to be with the DHCP server. It is assigning a single MAC multiple IPs, and others are not being given an address at all. I have 10 clients total, some wired but mostly wireless, and the client list goes between 4 and 30 clients in he list in minutes. Then back down to 0.

Have now tried multiple types of firmware, Merlin included, and now have stock .260 from Asus going. I erased the nvram when applying .260 and it actually became stable for about 12 hours. Back to huge issues with connections not staying up for more than a minute. Even the wired connections are so unstable that I can't reliably use the admin UI.

Sound like a bad device and need to return it for another?

Yes. Your symptoms are bizarre and a properly (cat5e/cat6) wired connection should be 100% stable.

Start with the simplest network configuration possible: just the modem and one single computer plugged through Ethernet. Then gradually add more devices. It's possible one of your devices is doing weird things to your network.

Simple

I did end up troubleshooting it my going simple. Had just Comcast router and 66u with a single PC. With wireless radios off the wired connection remained stable. As soon as I enabled the 2.4 radio the wireless connection became so unstable I couldn't login to the router admin anymore. I did find that there was a Vonage appliance that had flakey Ethernet ports, could only get link lights when the cables were pushed certain ways. But even after taking it down to the simplest setup 66u went crazy soon as wireless radio was enabled.

Sounds like a defective router then. Have a shot at Asus's tech support, they will let you know if they feel you should RMA your router.
