Difference between 2 nvram variables?

Does anyone know if lan_netmask lan_netmask_rt will ever be set to different values? They seem to both hold the same value after being changed via the WebUI but I wondered why the duplication? Unless one is for AP mode or something?

If you look at nvram you will find a lot of similar nvram values, I guess they are reserved for compatibility, so that when people downgrade to the old version of the firmware, they won't cause complaints.
