DIR-655, signal, rate, et al.

Headcase_Fargone

New Around Here
So I recently took the plunge and went N with a DIR-655. For the record, it's A4 running firmware 1.21. While I've read everything I could find on this site as far as articles and forum threads I still can't seem to figure this out.

I have a WDTV connected via DWA-140 going through two walls, approximately ~30 feet away. Signal typically shows around 60% in the D-Link Status console, however I usually can't seem to break 54mbps on the rate. Every now and then it will spike up to 108, but only momentarily.

I've done a site survey with NetStumbler as recommended and found a few other networks in the vicinity (I live in an apartment). I picked channel 11 as that seems to have APs the furthest away judging by the signal.

Are there recommended settings I should try? Right now I have auto channel turned off (when it's on my WDTV tends to lose connection randomly, requiring a power-cycle of the unit), 802.11n only, Best Transmission Rate and Auto 20/40mhz for channel width. I'm not entirely certain about the Channel Width setting, as I'm not even all that clear on what it does.

I've fiddled with antenna arrangement and thus far \ | / seems to get me the best results.

What's really confusing me is that signal percentage seems to have no correlation with my rate. I can sit here and watch the signal jump from an average of 60% up to 75% and my rate go from 54 to 27. What determines rate?

Any insights or links to articles would be appreciated.

Edit: For the past 15 minutes or so it's been connected at 108mbps with a 58% signal.

Edit 2: Further update. Changing the Channel Width to 20mhz has increased my signal by a steady 10%. However, I never see anything over a 78mbps rate in the Status console, whereas before I seeing spikes to 108 and higher. Does this mean anything at all? Should I perhaps just not be paying attention to that annoying little figure?

I wouldn't pay much attention to either signal level or link rate unless you are trying to debug a problem. Both can/will constantly change depending on the product.

You should be using WPA2/AES security if you want full 802.11N link rates (up
to 300 Mbps). WEP or WPA/TKIP will get you only 54 Mbps link rate as per the
802.11N spec.

Should have mentioned that I'm running WPA2 AES, having read one of your articles. I also put my 802.11g Roku box on a separate WLAN, per the same article. Good stuff.
